Choosing a Hair Loss Doctor

Due to the prevalence of hair loss all over the world, hair medicine has become a much sought after branch of medical science.  Hair restoration for one is one of the biggest aspects of cosmetic surgery.  There are so many doctors now in the field of hair science that it might be difficult to choose the right one for you. It might also be very confusing and tempting because of the all the marketing schemes plastered everywhere.  Well, there are some tips to help guide you on your quest for a good doctor.

Going through the Internet will give you a good idea of the who’s who in the hair med world, but if you already have a doctor in mind or if one was suggested by a friend, you can check a few things.  It will be good to know what kind of education the doctor received.  Graduating from an excellent school is a good sign, but it isn’t everything, either.  You should also check for any additional conferences and seminars that the doctor has attended.  An up to date physician displays passion for the field he works in.  It shows commitment and a sign that the doctor is more than knowledgeable.  If he is a part of an organization like FACS or Fellow American College of Surgeons, his quality as a doctor will be even more apparent, making his diagnosis and prescriptions even more trustworthy.  Another notable organization is the AHLA, or American Hair Loss Association.

If surgery becomes necessary, then the training of your prospective surgeon is only half of your worry.  The doctor must also be experienced with the type of hair restoration procedure you want.  Testimonials from friends and other patients will give you an idea of how skilled the physician is.  How the long the clinic has been around also shows that many patients have done business with said doctor.  Looking at before and after pictures is also highly recommended.  Seeing for yourself the results of the doctor’s patients should either set you at ease, or raise an alarm.  If you like what you see, there shouldn’t be a problem with the result.

Speaking of liking what you see though, that whole expression ‘the devil’s in the details’ really counts.  If you spot that the clinic is unkempt, this might be a sign of hard times due to shoddy workmanship.  Of course, it would be unfair to assume this right away, so ask around and find out if your suspicions are correct.  Finally, cost shouldn’t be too much of a factor.  In the field of medicine, you normally get what you pay for.  Getting a “great deal” from a young inexperienced doctor might be something you will regret later on.  It would be good however, to make sure you will get the price you agreed upon.  Sometimes clinics have hidden costs that surprise you; make sure this doesn’t happen.  In the end, a good hair doctor will most likely perform a flawless surgery.  We don’t want those grafts to be noticeable now, do we?
