Hair Loss Statistics

Alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, male pattern baldness -- there are a number of reasons for hair loss in both men and women.  Whether intentional or unintentional, as some people cause their own hair loss, it is no wonder that the occurrence is so common.  In the United States alone, the figures are pretty substantial.  The same can be said for the rest of the world.  Roughly 12 to 15 percent of any country suffers from the most common type of balding, which is androgenetic alopecia, mentioned above as male pattern baldness.  In the US, that translates to 35 million people.  That’s just considering the men. After the age of 40, 65% of men suffer from hair loss, and it only gets higher from there.

Among women, the statistics are a little lower.  A lesser number of 21 million in the US suffer from any kind of hair loss.  Despite being a lower percentage, it is still a little disturbing considering that most of society is not made well-aware of the implications of balding in women.  This may just as well translate to 21 million people suffering from deep self-esteem, or even self-loathing issues.  Now that’s quite a number of mental cases.  Of course that’s not accurate, but it should remind people that, women suffer from hair loss a little more commonly than they think.  Maybe then, women will be more open about the problem, instead of the self-imposed isolation many resort to.

Other figures are also enlightening.  For one, a large percentage of men, over 65%, believes that balding is inescapable, a mere fact of life.  This is interesting because 85% of men still depend on Minoxidil, an FDA approved drug, to help them with their increasingly shiny scalps.  15% resort to Finasteride, another hair product that uses steroids to revive the hair.  This shows that men, despite their cynical beliefs, are still willing to try anything to restore their once glorious mane.

Since 2004 the numbers of people seeking treatment around the world has more than doubled.  Currently, from around 250,000, the number of people seeking treatment is close to 900,000.  The number considering hair restoration procedures is also more than 12% higher.  Men are more likely to consider surgery compared to women.  This is curious, as 50 percent of women see their doctors first regarding the problem, as opposed to merely 25% of men.

To show how desperate some people can get, the figures show that 30% of all people suffering from balding will give up sex just to get their hair back.  Even more, close to 50% would give up all the money they worked so hard for, just to have a full head of hair once again.  This should teach people that alopecia is a highly sensitive topic.  It also doesn’t mean that since you are not suffering from it, that you won’t in the future.  The older you get, the chances just keep getting higher.  Seriously, the numbers speak for themselves.
